Ken Hata Farris is a Japanese-American architectural designer based in New York City. His work interfaces between the mediums of language and space, understanding architecture as a constant translation between drawings, images, models, and references.
He has experience internationally across America and Japan, previously working at Tadao Ando Architect and Associates for five years, with additional work at MOS, WXY, Katsuhiro Miyamoto, and Koji Tsutsui. He is currently working at OMA New York.
During his time at Tadao Ando Architect and Associates, he worked on over 55 projects across North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. These projects included museums, offices, libraries, hotels, temples, teahouses, residences, watches, sculptures, furniture, installations, publications, and exhibitions. Additionally, he served as Tadao Ando’s translator, interpreting and facilitating all meetings with international clients.
Ken received a Master of Architecture from Columbia University GSAPP, where he received the Honor Award for Design and Visualization and the Avery Scholarship, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was twice awarded the Judith Lee Stronach Traveling Scholarship.
His recent work includes Mistranslations, an exhibition of his personal work and collaborations with Alexandre Vicente at the Nipponbashi Gallery in Osaka, designed by Tadao Ando. Ken’s work has been featured in publications such as Domus Magazine, About Magazine, Divisare, and Columbia Abstract. He has previously taught the Introduction to Architecture Summer Intensive Studio at Columbia GSAPP and held teaching assistant roles there.
